Dressmaker

itch.io and Steam are not the same build

This prototype

This prototype on itch.io is still Prototype 0.5.5, Name your own price for Windows, Linux and Mac. Steam is the separate paid full release that shipped on 21 September 2026. The itch page says the prototype was made in about three weeks and then updated; it is not a demo key for app 4019220.

Mac prototype builds are not notarized. Apple may warn that they might be malicious; itch documents Open Anyway under Privacy & Security. Steam's macOS build is a different binary with store flags for macOS true. Do not treat an unsigned zip warning as a Steam problem. If you bought the full game, install it from Steam on Windows or macOS and ignore the itch zips unless you want the historical snapshot. The Release Date Trailer on this page is advertising that Steam ship, not a new prototype zip, and Build 403 only exists on the paid branch. Discord is shared; the builds are not. If a friend sends you a Linux zip, that is Prototype 0.5.5 even if they call it Dressmaker. Steam will not install that zip.

Two products, two storefronts

itch.io hosts Prototype 0.5.5 as a name-your-price download for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Steam hosts Dressmaker as a paid Windows and macOS game with achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. Merging those pages is how players end up installing the unsigned Mac zip and wondering why the Steam overlay is missing.

The prototype page still invites players to Discord to talk with the developers. That invite, discord.gg/tBa93Rzgj5, is the same Dressmaker Discord listed on the press kit. It is a community door, not a Steam key dispenser.

Wholesome Direct carried the Release Date Trailer that announced a September 2026 Steam launch. That trailer is the video on this page. It is advertising the paid game, not Prototype 0.5.5.

itch.io Prototype 0.5.5

Name your own price zip labelled Dressmaker Prototype 0.5.5. Linux is included here. Mac builds are unsigned. The page still presents itself as a prototype, not as the 2026 Steam ship.

Steam full release

Paid Steam product, USD 14.99 with a 10 percent launch discount, coming_soon false. Linux is false on the store. Build 403 is the first live patch after this ship date.

Linux on itch, not on Steam

Steam's platform flags are Windows true, macOS true, Linux false. itch's file list includes Linux zips for the prototype. If you want a Linux build today, you are talking about Prototype 0.5.5, not the live Steam branch. Roadmap talk of other ports does not flip the Linux store flag by itself.

Unsigned Mac prototype builds can trip Gatekeeper. itch's own copy tells you to use Open Anyway. The Steam macOS build is a store-distributed app and is the one to use if you bought the full game.

Minimum Steam PC spec is Windows 10, i5 or Ryzen, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD 630, DirectX 11, 1 GB storage. Mac minimum is Apple M1, 8 GB RAM, 1 GB storage. Those numbers are Steam's, not itch's.

What carries from prototype to Steam

The making loop — fabric, sketch, cut, sew, decorate, deliver or sell — is already the prototype pitch and remains the Steam pitch. Pet the kitty is on the press kit and the store. Named clients, 32 achievements, Build 403's shop bell, and the 14.99 price are Steam-era facts.

Do not expect prototype saves, Linux zips, or unsigned Mac workarounds to be supported as Steam Cloud data. Cloud is a Steam category.

If you only want the live game, buy on Steam. If you want the three-week prototype as a historical build, itch still hosts it at Name your own price.

Who shipped which desk

Elyaradine is the itch publisher name on the prototype page. Cozy Lives is the Steam developer; Free Lives is the Steam publisher. Press-kit credits still apply to the full game: Jonathan Hau-Yoon, Ruan Rothmann, Sara Laubscher, Sabrina Becker, Jason Sutherland.

Kerstin Hall, Meydän, Hyphenza, and Anja Venter Rausch appear in locked term lists as names to keep verbatim. They are credits, not extra storefronts.

When a guide on this site talks about grain, bobbin, or major commissions, it is talking about Steam unless it explicitly says Prototype 0.5.5.

Why the zip is still up

itch still hosts Prototype 0.5.5 because the studio left it up as a name-your-price historical build. Wishlist posts credited prototype players. That is gratitude, not a statement that the zip will receive Build 403's shop bell or lace retag.

If a guide tells you to ring the bell, it is talking about Steam. If a guide tells you about unsigned Mac Open Anyway, it is talking about itch. Mixing those sentences is how support threads catch fire.

Pay for the full game on Steam when you want achievements, cloud, and the 21 September 2026 content. Tip the prototype if you want to keep the three-week snapshot. They are allowed to coexist; they are not allowed to be confused. Wishlist posts that thank prototype players are talking about the zip you already ran, not about a Steam beta tab hiding inside app 4019220.
